The Trekker Elk Hunter / Cub Combo is a dual-knife system designed for hunters who need to manage everything from the heavy breakdown of a large bull elk to the intricate caping work required for a trophy mount. By housing two specialized blades in a single, piggyback-style leather sheath, Knives of Alaska provides a comprehensive solution that eliminates the need to carry multiple mismatched tools. This combo is built for the rugged conditions of the backcountry, ensuring you have the right edge geometry for every stage of the harvest.

The Blades

1. The Elk Hunter (Primary Blade)

  • The workhorse of the duo, the Elk Hunter is designed for the heavy lifting.
  • Design: A stout, swept-back skinner with a deep belly, optimized for long, efficient strokes through thick elk hide.
  • Steel: Typically forged from D2 Tool Steel, vacuum heat-treated to 59-61 HRC for maximum edge retention during the breakdown of large-frame game.
  • Function: Ideal for skinning, quartering, and major muscle separation. Its robust spine can handle the leverage needed for heavy joint work.

2. The Cub Bear (Detail/Caping Blade)

  • The "Cub" is a legendary detail knife, prized for its surgical precision.
  • Design: Features a specialized handle with a finger hole or deep choil, allowing the hunter to "choke up" and place their index finger nearly on top of the point for ultimate control.
  • Function: Perfect for "zipping" open the legs, fine caping around the eyes and antlers, and precision trimming.
  • Serrations: The spine often features a small section of fine serrations to help with cutting through cartilage or tough connective tissue without dulling the main edge.

Key Features

  • Suregrip Handles: Both knives feature the Santoprene "Suregrip" handles, providing a high-friction, rubberized texture that stays secure in the hand even when wet or cold.
  • Piggyback Leather Sheath: A custom-engineered, heavy-duty vegetable-tanned leather sheath holds both knives securely. This "two-in-one" carry system saves belt space and ensures your detail knife is always with your primary skinner.
  • D2 Tool Steel Construction: Both blades are built with D2 steel, a "semi-stainless" alloy that offers incredible hardness. While it requires a light coat of oil to prevent patina, its ability to hold an edge through an entire elk processing session is world-class.
  • Full-Tang Integrity: Both knives are full-tang, ensuring there are no weak points between the blade and the handle.
